Outdoor Activities for Seniors During the Fall

Fall is finally here, and there is so much to enjoy with this change of season. Cedarfield provides a wide range of opportunities for resident engagement within our community, including our innovative Pathways to Wellness program, but fall is the perfect time to explore the local community and take advantage of all the seasonal events and pastimes. Outdoor activities for seniors deliver many benefits, including physical health, social interactions and mental well-being, as you take in the crisp fall air.

Enjoy the Fall Foliage

In Virginia, the peak of fall foliage colors usually occurs between October 10 and October 31. You don't have to go far to experience the full range of autumn colors. Cedarfield residents are able to step outside to see the fall foliage across our wooded campus. Residents can walk the miles of nature trails, or simply sit and enjoy the view. Keeping an eye on the foliage outside your window helps you gauge the prime leaf-viewing times throughout the area.

If you want to venture beyond the Cedarfield community, you have direct access to Deep Run Park. It features scenic trails perfect for hiking, biking and taking in the colors of the fall leaves. Bring your camera along to snap photos.  Fall leaf outings are a fun way to add exercise to your routine. However, driving through wooded areas is another way to take in the views. Go on a day trip, and try a new restaurant while your are out and about.

Gardening

While spring may be prime time for gardening, fall offers additional opportunities for you to grow various plants. Mums, ornamental cabbage and asters are just a few flowers that add color to your fall decor. Create a mini fall flower garden in a container to welcome your guests.

You can also grow some vegetables in autumn, and you can put your green thumb to use this fall.  Cool-weather crops that grow well in Virginia in the fall include cabbage, carrots, onions, spinach and lettuce. When you harvest your bounty, you can prepare fresh meals and snacks that provide energy for your other outdoor fall adventures.

Outdoor Craft Fairs and Events

Cooler autumn weather makes outdoor craft fairs and other outdoor events more enjoyable. Fall fairs offer a warm, nostalgic feeling with a festive ambiance. Many events feature entertainment, such as music and performances, along with various food vendors. Craft events give you the chance to find seasonal decorations to personalize your home or get a head start on holiday shopping.

One local fall tradition is the Richmond Folk Festival, which takes place along the historic riverfront in downtown Richmond. It includes traditional crafts, dance, music and other events across six stages. Explore local community event calendars to learn about more options. Attending these local events with friends can make for a fun social event to boost your mental well-being.

Benefits of Participating in Outdoor Activities

By spending time outdoors, you can gain several benefits that support your well-being. Cooler temperatures in autumn also make being outdoors more comfortable. Some benefits include:

  • Physical activity: Fall activities that take place outdoors can keep you active. As you explore all that fall has to offer, you can typically walk from place to place, increasing your number of daily steps. Gardening can also keep you active with various moves that involve your whole body. Regular exercise can improve your balance, flexibility and strength. It may also reduce your risk of developing certain health conditions.
  • Mental well-being: Fresh air and sunshine can boost your mood. Connecting with nature can reduce stress, leaving you feeling more relaxed. Seeing fall foliage might spark memories or bring a sense of peace.
  • Social interactions: Inviting friends or family along for your outdoor fall outings can strengthen your social connections. Regular socialization can help you feel a sense of belonging and support, encouraging you to engage in conversations and hear other people's perspectives. Plus, you can share your fall experiences with the people who are important to you, creating memories together.
  • Improved sleep: Exposure to natural light can help regulate your sleep patterns. Regular exercise can also improve your sleep. When you sleep better, you feel more rested and focused during the day.
