Advent reflection – 2020

The Advent our grandson was four years old, he was with his family for the weekly Sunday Mass. They were sitting in the balcony and Jack was quietly coloring when the priest said, “Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again!” At which point Jack stopped with poised crayon, and observed loudly, “WHAT? HE’S DEAD? NOBODY TOLD ME!”

On another occasion that year, also at Mass, Jack had a small package of gummy bears ready to open for a mid-service snack when his mom handed him a dollar bill for the collection plate. As the plate was passed, Jack looked between the dollar in one hand and the treat in the other and gave Jesus his best: the gummy bears.

These two incidents never fail to warm my heart. Jack is now a junior at university and as thoughtful as he was at four.
